Jiuzhaigou Valley
China's fairy-tale national park — turquoise lakes, waterfall galleries, and Tibetan villages
Overview
Jiuzhaigou — "Nine Village Valley" — earned its UNESCO World Heritage status honestly. The 60km Y-shaped valley delivers one surreal scene after another: lakes so turquoise they look Photoshopped, multi-tiered waterfalls cascading through forested gorges, and snowcapped peaks reflecting in mirror-still water. The first time I saw Five Flower Lake (五花海), I genuinely thought my eyes were malfunctioning. The colors — turquoise, jade green, deep blue, amber — come from mineral deposits and algae on the lake bed, visible through water so clear you can see fallen logs 10 meters down. September-October turns the surrounding forest into a mosaic of red, gold, and orange. It's overwhelmingly beautiful in a way that photos can't capture.
Massive 2024 Update: High-Speed Rail Now Available
The biggest news in Sichuan tourism: in August 2024, the Chengdu-Jiuzhaigou high-speed rail line opened. The train from Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai Station takes about 2 hours (most trains 1.5-2.5 hours; the old bus route was 8-9 hours on winding mountain roads). Second-class tickets run ¥141-159. From the station, it's a 1.5-2 hour shuttle bus (¥51) to the park entrance. Total journey from Chengdu to the park entrance is approximately 4-4.5 hours. This makes Jiuzhaigou a feasible 2-day trip from Chengdu — something that simply wasn't practical before. Several trains run daily, departing Chengdu East in the morning.
The Three Main Valleys
- Rize Valley (日则沟) — The Star Attraction: This is the postcard Jiuzhaigou. Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal Waterfall, and the Mirror Lake (where reflections are so perfect you can't tell up from down). This is where you'll spend most of your time.
- Zechawa Valley (则查洼沟) — The Highest Views: Long Lake (the highest at 3,100m) and Five-Color Pond (五彩池) — the smallest but most intensely colored lake in the valley. Less crowded than Rize Valley.
- Shuzheng Valley (树正沟) — The Gateway: The entrance valley with 14 lakes, including Reed Lake and Sparkling Lake. The Nuorilang Waterfall (宽200m) is between Rize and Shuzheng valleys — it's iconic, featured in the CCTV Journey to the West theme song.

Local Pro-Tips
- September-October is peak season for autumn colors. Book everything 2-3 weeks ahead. Crowds are intense but the scenery is at its best.
- Use the shuttle bus strategically. The park is huge. Ride to the top of each valley, then walk downhill through the highlights. Don't try to walk the whole thing.
- Bring layers and rain gear. Mountain weather changes fast. A sunny morning can turn to cold rain by noon.
- Stay near the park entrance. The town of Pengfeng (彭丰) has hotels from ¥150-500/night. Staying inside the park is no longer allowed.
- Combine with Huanglong National Park (2 hrs from Jiuzhaigou) if you have 3 days. Similar scenery but different character — travertine pools instead of lakes.
