Jiuzhaigou Valley

China's fairy-tale national park — turquoise lakes, waterfall galleries, and Tibetan villages

Jiuzhaigou Valley turquoise Five Flower Lake with fallen log and forest backdrop

Overview

Jiuzhaigou — "Nine Village Valley" — earned its UNESCO World Heritage status honestly. The 60km Y-shaped valley delivers one surreal scene after another: lakes so turquoise they look Photoshopped, multi-tiered waterfalls cascading through forested gorges, and snowcapped peaks reflecting in mirror-still water. The first time I saw Five Flower Lake (五花海), I genuinely thought my eyes were malfunctioning. The colors — turquoise, jade green, deep blue, amber — come from mineral deposits and algae on the lake bed, visible through water so clear you can see fallen logs 10 meters down. September-October turns the surrounding forest into a mosaic of red, gold, and orange. It's overwhelmingly beautiful in a way that photos can't capture.

Massive 2024 Update: High-Speed Rail Now Available

The biggest news in Sichuan tourism: in August 2024, the Chengdu-Jiuzhaigou high-speed rail line opened. The train from Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai Station takes about 2 hours (most trains 1.5-2.5 hours; the old bus route was 8-9 hours on winding mountain roads). Second-class tickets run ¥141-159. From the station, it's a 1.5-2 hour shuttle bus (¥51) to the park entrance. Total journey from Chengdu to the park entrance is approximately 4-4.5 hours. This makes Jiuzhaigou a feasible 2-day trip from Chengdu — something that simply wasn't practical before. Several trains run daily, departing Chengdu East in the morning.
