Dujiangyan Irrigation System
2,200 years old and still working — the engineering project that made Chengdu possible
Overview
In 256 BC, a Qin-dynasty governor named Li Bing faced a problem: the Minjiang River flooded catastrophically every spring, then dried to a trickle in summer — making the Sichuan Plain simultaneously flood-prone and drought-prone. His solution was an irrigation system so elegantly designed that it's still functioning 2,200 years later, feeding water to 5,300 km² of farmland and 7 million people. No dams, no pumps — just gravity, stone, and an understanding of fluid dynamics that wouldn't be formally described in the West for another two millennia.
The Three Masterpieces of Engineering
- Fish Mouth Divider (鱼嘴): A teardrop-shaped rock island that splits the Minjiang River into two channels — 40% for irrigation, 60% for flood control. The split ratio adjusts automatically based on water volume.
- Flying Sand Spillway (飞沙堰): A low overflow weir that redirects excess water and 80% of river sediment back to the outer channel. When water flows over it, you can see the physics in action — debris spins off to the side.
- Bottleneck Channel (宝瓶口): A narrow gap carved through a mountain ridge that controls how much water enters the inner irrigation channel. Too much = flood. Too little = drought. Li Bing got it right.
What to See on Site
- Anlan Suspension Bridge (安澜桥): The "Bridge of Calm Waves" — an ancient bamboo-and-pile bridge spanning the Minjiang. It sways dramatically, which is half the fun and half the terror.
- Erwang Temple (二王庙): Temple dedicated to Li Bing and his son Li Erlang. Carved into the hillside above the Fish Mouth, it's a scenic viewpoint and cultural monument.
- Lidui Park (离堆公园): The park entrance on the "Bottleneck Channel" side. Panoramic view of the entire irrigation system from the top floor of the Guanlan Pavilion.
- Drumbeating Water Release Ceremony: Performance at scheduled times demonstrating the ancient water-release ritual. Check schedule on arrival.
Practical Information
- Hours: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM (summer), 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM (winter)
- Tickets: ¥80
- Getting There: High-speed rail from Chengdu (Chengdu Railway Station or Xipu Station) to Dujiangyan Station — 30 minutes, ¥10. Then taxi (¥15) or bus #4 to the park entrance.
- Duration: 3-4 hours for a thorough visit.
Local Pro-Tips
- Morning for fewer crowds. Afternoon groups arrive from Chengdu tour buses.
- The Anlan Bridge is a must. It connects the Fish Mouth to Erwang Temple — the most memorable crossing of any irrigation system.
- Combine with Mount Qingcheng. They're 15km apart. Dujiangyan in the morning, Mount Qingcheng in the afternoon = perfect full day.
- Wear good walking shoes. The park involves hill paths and stairs. Not a flat walk.
