Mount Emei (峨眉山)
One of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains — golden summit sunrise at 3,099m
Overview
Mount Emei rises 3,099 meters above sea level — one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pilgrims have been climbing its stone steps for over 1,000 years, drawn by the golden summit temple where, on clear mornings, you can see the sun rise above a "sea of clouds" that stretches to the horizon. The mountain is also home to hundreds of aggressive Tibetan macaques who will steal your food, water bottles, and anything shiny if you're not careful. The lower slopes have natural hot springs — perfect for soaking sore legs after the climb down.
The Route to the Top
- Base to Wannian Temple (万年寺): 1-hour cable car or 2-hour hike. Wannian Temple houses a 62kg bronze statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva from the Song Dynasty. The temple's surrounding forest is ancient and atmospheric.
- Wannian Temple to Golden Summit (金顶): 1.5-hour cable car (¥65 up) or 3-4 hour hike through cloud forests. The cable car climbs 1,200 meters in minutes — the view is spectacular.
- Golden Summit (金顶): The 48m-ten-story golden pagoda gleams at the summit. On clear mornings, the sunrise over the cloud sea is one of China's most photographed natural phenomena. The "Buddha's Halo" — a rainbow ring around your shadow — appears on misty days.
- Monkey Zone: Between Wannian Temple and the mid-mountain area. Hundreds of macaques. They're wild, aggressive, and will grab bags. No food visible. No shiny objects. No eye contact.

Local Pro-Tips
- Sunrise timing: Arrive at Golden Summit by 5:30 AM. Sunrise is typically 5:45-6:15 AM depending on season. Book a hotel near the summit cable car station the night before.
- The monkeys are not cute. They're wild animals that bite. Keep food hidden, bags zipped, jewelry covered. Don't carry plastic bags visibly — they associate them with food.
- Bring warm clothes. The summit is 15-20°C cooler than the base. Even in summer, mornings at the summit require a jacket.
- Hot springs at the base: After descending, soak at the Lingxiu Hot Springs (¥80-150). Your legs will thank you.
- Combine with Leshan Giant Buddha (2 hours by car) for a 2-day Buddhist pilgrimage trip.
